The Evolution of Chicago’s Bud Billiken Parade: A Look Back in Time

It starts with the Chicago Defender, one of Chicago’s oldest Black media outlets. According to the Encyclopedia of Chicago, Founding editor Robert S. Abbott created “Bud Billiken” as a youth club in 1923. The club got its name because Bud was Abbott’s nickname, and Billiken was a guardian angel of children from a Chinese legend.
