About Us

A 17 year old Rwebel with hundreds of stories under her belt wanted to publish, but she couldn’t because she didn’t know how.

Founding Story

Mission

Our mission is to redefine publishing – one story at a time. We are a multi platform hub providing Black creatives the tools they need to disrupt the publishing industry. Black creatives were once iced out of the industry and face many barriers to entry to this day, and Rwebel will be the spark that lights a publishing revolution.

Our Founding Story

Rwebel was started in 2019 by a 23 year old college student with a vision: to fulfill her teenage dream.

At 17, Javanna Plummer was starry eyed and ambitious. She had just finished one of her short stories, and she was eager to publish it. She could not because of barriers to entry. She didn’t have enough money to go the traditional route and not enough information to go the independent route. It wouldn’t be until two years later that she learned how to do it independently, and this was an uphill battle. She got the book out, but she did not know how to promote it nor how to edit it. So, again, she was facing a barrier to entry. Once she finally had the tools she needed to publish the way she wanted to to gain the conversions to make it profitable, she decided that she wanted to become a coach for others seeking alternate ways of entering the publishing industry. Thus, she created Rwebel.

Originally, it was supposed to be a talk show between friends. Then it was a podcast and a blog. Then a magazine too. Then a publisher. After five years, Rwebel will make a critical pivot into publishing and all of the nuances that come with it. So, this means the magazine might have an audio component to it, the author of our next book is featured on our magazine, etc. Like our magazine name says, we are boundless – unchained to any specific form.

We are a canvas waiting for creatives to paint their self portraits.

Our Team

Our team is small but mighty. Working as a team of two, our Rwebel in Chief plays a front facing role in producing our content while our historian works behind the scenes on research and fact checking.

Javanna Plummer, Rwebel in Chief

Javanna is Rwebel’s founder and CEO. Affectionately dubbing herself the “Rwebel in Chief,” Javanna is the visionary behind the operations, website, and publishing.

Clifford Varnado Jr, Historian

Clifford is a walking library. He can name books off the top of his head and has a long memory of historical events as well as the people who documented them. He plays a crucial role in research, proofreading, and fact-checking.
