Reminder: Hot Girls Can Be Vulnerable Too

Last Sunday, rapper Tory Lanez was arrested on concealed weapon charges, according to Vulture. Initially, some thought that fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion, who was in the car with him, had also been arrested. Yet, as the week progressed, more facts were released.

On Thursday, Megan spoke out about the incident for the first time. In an Instagram caption, she wrote, “I was never arrested. This whole experience was an eye opener and a blessing in disguise. I hate that it took this experience for me to learn how to protect my energy.”

This was in response to a shooting that left Megan with a foot injury. In a statement, Megan added that this was “done with the intention to physically harm” her. By the end of the week, Lanez was being looked at as a suspect in this crime. Once word of this hit social media, memes started pouring out.

Some users even began tweeting “Tory Lanez set the tone” in a series of disturbing tweets glorifying the violence that Meg endured. Other Twitter users fought back against this and said this would not have happened had it been a male rapper involved in the same altercation.

Some famous examples are Nipsey Hussle, Pop Smoke, and XXXTentacion, who were all shot and killed. After their fatal incidents, there were no memes made about the pain they endured. However, when it came to a Black woman, users wrote, it seemed like a joke. Megan spoke out about this as well.

In a tweet, she wrote, “It might be funny to y’all on the internet and just another messy topic for you to talk about but this is my real life.” Sadly, this is not the first time Black women’s pain has been “memeified,” or turned into memes for social media.

Previously, I wrote about Breonna Taylor’s murder, which had been memeified as well. While George Floyd’s murder warranted serious posts, it seems that Breonna Taylor’s was only good enough for memes. Really, what this shows is that Black women’s pain is not taken seriously, one Twitter user noted.

Although some might say this is just social media, it has real world implications as well, since the lack of care for Black women can be dangerous and even sometimes fatal. On July 18, CNN reported that Breonna Taylor lived for about 5 minutes after police shot her, yet she did not receive medical care.

This means that she could have lived, had she been given the proper care. Alas, she wasn’t – not in life and not in death. As Megan works toward recovery, this incident is a grim reminder that even after leading mass protests, Black women are still the most unprotected group in America. ~ℝ
