Remembering Yolanda Howell: A Legacy of Love, Purpose, and Grace

My Grandmere was a trailblazer, and I remember her fondly on her 79th birthday.

Boundless Issue 3 The Commemorative Issue

When I think of trailblazers, I think of my Grandmere (as we affectionately called her). Her light illuminated the path for countless others and her legacy will forever remain etched in our hearts. Born January 12, 1946, Yolanda was one of five children to Daisy Mitchell and Theodore Terry. She is survived by her older sister Yvonne Brown and her younger brother Wendell Terry.

From a young age, Yolanda was a baker. Beginning at age 10, she would iron out a legacy of baking prowess that manifested into a small home business. She would bake cakes for neighbors, friends, and family most of her life. She would showcase her creativity and dedication to culinary excellence through these cakes.

Some of her most famous desserts were her sweet potato pie, strawberry cake, pound cake, and German chocolate cake. Later, she experimented with strawberry cheesecake and a decorative Fourth of July cake. However, her vibrant personality extended beyond her cakes. At Christmastime, she would pull out her vintage tree from neatly lined storage containers and have her grandkids help her set it up and decorate it. At the root, she was a creative, loving, and generous soul. She will be dearly missed, and I commemorate her with this magazine.
