Rihanna’s Maternity Era is the Moment

Where has this Rihanna been all my life?

Rihanna’s approach to motherhood is the inspiration you never knew you needed. From her jaw-dropping fashion ensembles during pregnancy to the announcement of baby #2 during her iconic super bowl performance, Rihanna is showing the world that moms can have it all.

For starters, Rihanna taught us to reimagine maternity wear beyond baggy dresses and maternity jeans. Through illustrious looks, Rihanna reminds us that pregnant bellies are worth celebrating.

The superstar’s maternity fashion has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. Rihanna has embraced her new figure with fearless outfits that showcase her baby bump. Whether it be a sheer black Dior dress with the liner removed or a catsuit and stiletto heels, she is starting a conversation and is not afraid to dress how she wants. Her first pregnancy-reveal photos flaunted her bump peeking out of a bright pink Chanel puffer coat and low-waisted jeans, and adorned with a long, jeweled necklace. In an interview with Vogue, she confirms her rationale to wear bump-forward looks:

“I’m hoping that we were able to redefine what’s considered ‘decent’ for pregnant women. My body is doing incredible things right now, and I’m not going to be ashamed of that. This time should feel celebratory. Because why should you be hiding your pregnancy?”

Rihanna has always had an impeccable eye for fashion, and it is apparent she has no plans to tone it down now that she’s a mother, and neither should you.

Yet, Rihanna’s fashion is not the only point of interest in her mommy era. Besides her innovative looks, you can also take inspiration from her nonstop approach to business endeavors as a working mom. I promise you have never seen a mom hustle harder than Ms. Fenty. The beauty mogul, singer, songwriter, and philanthropist has recently added the title of “mother” to her resume, and there is a lot to learn from her as she continues to triumph in all categories during this phase of life.

Recently, she showcased her talents during the 2023 Super Bowl halftime performance. After the performance, there was speculation of a second pregnancy, which was later confirmed, as she kept emphasizing her stomach during the performance. As an expectant mother, performing in front of millions while 60 feet in the air, Rihanna showed great strength and dedication.

Rihanna has established a different standard for pregnancy, but this is not everyone’s reality or calling. Some expectant mothers would choose to opt out of engagements of great magnitude due to their new primary focus, and that is okay. Choosing to focus on your family is an honorable decision and those who sacrifice their careers for the sake of their family should be recognized.

Without a doubt, Rihanna showed women that they have a choice in the type of life they want to live. Her actions motivate mothers who feel discouraged or unsure if they can still pursue their dreams. Although it may take a lot of work, it could be rewarding.

Rihanna’s Super Bowl success is not her only recent win. She was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song for “Lift Me Up” featured in the new Black Panther film, Wakanda Forever. This was her first Oscar nomination, and she performed the song at the Oscars too. She continues to break barriers.

Outside of her singing career, Rihanna also serves as the founder, CEO, and owner of two brands, Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty. Both her beauty and clothing lines are inclusive brands, with colors and sizes to fit everybody. It is clear Rihanna strives to create good in this world and promote inclusivity through her business undertakings.

Lastly, one of the most impressive areas of Rihanna’s life has been her philanthropic work. At the young age of 18, Rihanna founded the Believe Foundation to help terminally ill children financially, emotionally, and medically. She has performed free concerts benefitting children in need, raised money for people suffering from AIDS, and donated millions to numerous charitable groups focused on climate, poverty, cancer research, and more. Through the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) that Rihanna founded in 2012, she gives back to young people around the globe via educational resources, scholarships, and emergency response programs.

Through her work as a performer, businesswoman, and humanitarian, Rihanna has made it clear that women can master multiple areas of their lives; an exciting career, a sexy wardrobe, altruistic work, and a loving commitment to family are all possible. You might even say she is in the prime of her life given all her recent feats. As a woman, seeing her soar professionally and take care of her babies at the same time has given me hope and excitement. Take what you need from Rihanna’s playbook, even if it means breaking the rules every now and then.
